Trieu Vang – Digging Ponds, Building a Farm – Love Begins with Simple Things
This morning, after breakfast, Uyên Thư and I set out to tackle a task that seemed simple enough: digging a large pond where the Muscovy ducks could bathe.
We chatted, sang, and laughed together as we dug. Yet, amidst the laughter, Uyên Thư suddenly asked, "Dad, when you come back here, when do you have to leave again?"
I gently replied that I would likely stay to help her and her mother for a few more days—leaving only when the work was done. But then she asked, "Can't you just... not leave again?"
I could only tell her that I had to go to work to earn a living. Some questions from children are brief, yet they leave adults deep in thought. I knew I still had a journey ahead of me, even though my heart longed to stay with the ones I loved.
While we were digging the pond, Tiểu Vinh headed into the forest to forage. She was in luck; she stumbled upon a xấu tree that had shed a bounty of fruit in the morning breeze. She gathered the best ones to sell at the market for extra income, while keeping some aside to preserve in sugar for Uyên Thư to enjoy later.
The market was quite a distance away, but thinking of the life she and her daughter shared, Tiểu Vinh persevered. To her surprise, no sooner had she set down her basket than a customer asked to buy the fruit. Within two hours, she had sold almost everything she had brought.
Then came a moment that took me by surprise. Tiểu Vinh quietly approached from behind, covered my eyes, and asked, "Guess who?" I could only smile sheepishly. Some feelings need no words; sometimes, a simple gesture is enough to make them felt.
As evening fell, we prepared dinner together. A long day drew to a close with a simple meal, yet one filled with warmth and a sense of togetherness. After the meal, I walked back to the farm alone in the night.
Upon arriving, everything was quiet. The livestock had already been moved to their new quarters, leaving the farm feeling much more deserted.
Gazing at the electric lights glowing in the night, I suddenly thought of the home where Uyên Thư and her mother lived. There was no light there yet.
I realized that even though I would soon be leaving and might not be around here much longer, I wanted to do something for them before I went.
So, I quietly made a decision: tomorrow, I would arrange to get electricity connected to their home.
To many, it might seem like a small thing. But to me, that light would not only brighten their home but also serve as a token of the love I wanted to leave behind before continuing my journey.
🙏 Thank You, God, for giving me the opportunity—after every long day—to love, share with, and help the people I cherish.
Thank you all for accompanying me through these stories of life in the highlands. ❤️
If you were in my shoes and a child asked, "Can't you stay instead of going on?", how would you answer? Please leave your reply in the comments section.
