Huge Lake Michigan waves swamped the lighthouse pier in Michigan City, Indiana, as north winds drove water onto the walkway. Forecasts called for winds up to 46 miles per hour and occasional nearshore waves around 21 feet.
WHAT HAPPENED:
On Friday, October 16, waves broke over the pier and around the lighthouse. North winds crossed a long stretch of open lake, giving waves room to grow before reaching Indiana. Visitors approached the shoreline despite warnings. The footage did not establish measured wave heights.
AFFECTED LOCATIONS
• Michigan City and Washington Park Beach, Indiana
• New Buffalo, Michigan
• Milwaukee, Wisconsin
KEY WEATHER STATISTICS
• Northwest Indiana forecast: winds up to 46 miles per hour.
• Nearshore wave forecast: 12–16 feet, occasionally around 21 feet.
• New Buffalo reports: gusts around 40 miles per hour and waves about 10 feet.
• Saturday wave forecast: up to 7 feet, occasionally near 9 feet.
⚠️ IMPACT:
Waves covered the exposed walkway, creating a risk of people being knocked into the lake. Firefighters warned that conditions could prevent safe water entry, limiting rescue options to life rings or extended equipment. Seasonal lifeguards were no longer stationed on the beaches. The gale warning ended early Saturday, but a small craft advisory continued until 3 p.m., with calmer conditions forecast afterward.
