🎶 ONCE UPON A TIME… JUNIOR BYLES 1948~2025 🔥 Music Was His Prayer ✨ Original Roots Reggae Tribute EN/FR ✨ This original tribute by Lyric Poupette Production honors Junior Byles, one of the most moving, gifted and vulnerable voices of Jamaican roots reggae. Born Kenneth Byles Jr. in Kingston, Jamaica, he first entered music with The Versatiles in the late 1960s before beginning his solo career in the early 1970s. Then came one of the defining chapters of his musical life: his collaboration with Lee “Scratch” Perry. Together they created songs that became landmarks of roots reggae. Beat Down Babylon carried resistance against oppression. A Place Called Africa spoke of roots, identity and belonging. Curly Locks revealed another side of Junior: tender, intimate and deeply human. Fade Away became one of his most enduring songs, a warning against vanity, material obsession and a life without love for humanity. Junior Byles did not simply have a beautiful voice. His voice was inhabited. There was sweetness in it, fire, faith and fragility. In 1975, while his artistic path still held so much promise, his mental health deteriorated severely. Junior Byles was deeply connected to the Rastafari faith, and the death of Emperor Haile Selassie that year was reported as a devastating spiritual shock for him. Unable to reconcile the Emperor’s death with his beliefs, he fell into a profound depression, attempted suicide and was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Kingston. His mental-health struggles would remain part of his life for decades. The years that followed brought other hardships: hospitalization, personal loss, isolation and poverty. At times, Junior Byles lived on the streets. Yet even through those years, the artist had not disappeared. And neither had the people who remembered him. His story is also a story of solidarity. His family remained part of his support, while friends, musicians and members of the Jamaican reggae community repeatedly reached out to help him. In 2019, producer and humanitarian Claude “Big Stone” Sinclair, working with Junior’s family and his sister Janet, organized a benefit concert in Kingston to help with his medical and living expenses. Mutabaruka and Half Pint were among those who supported the initiative. Other figures who helped Junior over the years included Earl “Chinna” Smith, Mutabaruka, Niney the Observer and George Phang. Junior also received financial assistance from Bounty Killer’s foundation. And music itself continued to reach back for him. After years away from the spotlight, Junior returned to live performance in Jamaica in 2004, followed by appearances in the United Kingdom. Years later, his longtime friend Earl “Chinna” Smith helped carry Junior’s legacy forward through the album Still Beating Down Babylon, bringing musicians and singers together around Junior’s songs, including Freddie McGregor, Mykal Rose and Inner Circle. This solidarity matters. Because Junior Byles’ story is not only the story of a fall. It is also the story of hands reaching toward him. Of people who remembered the artist behind the illness. Of musicians who refused to let his songs disappear. Of a voice that, even through silence, continued to be heard. This tribute does not romanticize Junior Byles’ suffering, and it does not reduce him to his illness. It remembers the young man, the artist, the faith, the vulnerability, the songs and the message that survived everything. Not only the man. The message. Not only the pain. The prayer. Music was his prayer. May it bring him home. This tribute was created with deep respect for Junior Byles, his voice, his roots, his spiritual depth, his humanity and the extraordinary musical legacy he left behind. This is not a cover.
