Saint Ephraim recounts a powerful experience in which he was immersed in grace-filled prayer but chose his own reasoning instead of immediately obeying a simple request. The prayer vanished at once. Through this experience he came to understand with certainty that obedience is higher than prayer, because true prayer itself is born from obedience. The narration also reflects Saint Ephraim’s teachings on guarding the thoughts, avoiding self-justification, examining the conscience, humility, repentance, and the healing of the human will.
