What Ford v Ferrari Never Showed You About Bruce McLaren
Ford v Ferrari hands Bruce McLaren the 1966 Le Mans win on a technicality and then forgets him. But the real Bruce had four years left, and they ended on a test day at Goodwood, the same way Ken Miles's life ended at Riverside.
According to his co-driver Chris Amon, Bruce obeyed Ford's order to slow down at Le Mans before Miles ignored it. Less than eight months after Miles was killed testing the J-car, Bruce won the 12 Hours of Sebring in the Mark IV that Ford built from that design. In 1968 he won the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa in his own McLaren and didn't find out until a BRM mechanic told him. In 1969 his orange Can-Am cars won all 11 races. Then in June 1970, ten days after Denny Hulme was badly burned at Indianapolis, Bruce was killed testing the new M8D at Goodwood.
It's also the story of what came next, as Dan Gurney and a still-healing Hulme kept his team going, all the way to the 1974 Formula One world championships.
