Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s Jīva Jāgo is a call to the sleeping soul: wake up, remember the Lord, and take shelter of the holy name. Here, the traditional Bengali bhajan becomes a dark, 1960s Chicago gospel warning. A low, commanding female voice leads over heavy piano, bass, and brass, while a gospel choir answers with an increasingly urgent call to awaken. The music carries the weight of a spiritual reckoning — solemn, powerful, and insistent. The message is direct: illusion has kept the soul asleep, forgetful of its eternal relationship with the Lord. But Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has come with the medicine of the holy name, offering a way out of forgetfulness and back to divine love. Wake. Take the Name. Come home. You came into this world and forgot the Lord. Māyā bound you here and covered all you knew. CHOIR Wake… Wake, O soul… VERSE 2 I have come for you. Lord Gaura says: I have come to take you home. Except for Me, you have no friend. I have brought the medicine that destroys illusion. CHOIR WAKE, O SLEEPING SOUL. WAKE, O SLEEPING SOUL. VERSE 3 Take the Holy Name. Take this medicine. By this Name alone your suffering will end. Bhaktivinoda falls at the feet of Gaura, takes the Holy Name and begs for love of God. FINAL CHOIR WAKE, O SLEEPING SOUL. WAKE.
