🎧 Welcome to Jazz Bil Arabi — where the sounds, stories, and cultures of the Arab world are reimagined through jazz.

📖 THE STORY | القصة
Long before Yemen took its modern form, southern Arabia was home to powerful kingdoms whose cities grew wealthy along some of the ancient world's most valuable trade routes.
One of them was Qataban.
For centuries, Qataban controlled territory in what is now Yemen. Its capital, Timna, stood in Wadi Bayhan and became an important center in the network that moved frankincense, myrrh and other valuable goods from southern Arabia toward markets far beyond the peninsula.
Today, incense may seem ordinary.
In the ancient world, it was anything but.
Frankincense and myrrh were prized commodities used across distant societies, and the routes carrying them helped create extraordinary wealth in southern Arabia. Caravans crossed enormous stretches of difficult terrain, connecting kingdoms, oasis settlements and trading centers with the wider Near East and Mediterranean world.
Qataban grew inside this landscape of incense, agriculture and trade.
Its inhabitants wrote in Ancient South Arabian script, built cities and temples, issued laws and inscriptions, and left behind evidence of a sophisticated society whose political world was shared with neighboring kingdoms such as Saba, Hadramawt and Ma'in.
And among the objects that survived is something particularly fascinating for a music project.
An ancient Qatabanian funerary stela known as the Aylward Stela depicts two women: one playing a stringed instrument generally identified as a lyre, while another holds a drum.
We cannot know the melodies they played.
We cannot recover the rhythm.
But for a moment, an image carved thousands of years ago lets us see that music belonged to their world.
Eventually, Qataban disappeared as an independent kingdom. Timna declined and was abandoned, leaving archaeology and inscriptions to reconstruct pieces of a civilization that once participated in one of antiquity's great commercial networks.
