While travelling through British Columbia, we hit Windermere Lake on the paddle boards for a little fishing and exploring. While we were out there, we caught a colourful little pumpkinseed sunfish and decided to turn it into a catch and cook.
Pumpkinseed sunfish are native to eastern North America but have been introduced into British Columbia, where they are considered an invasive species. They can compete with native fish for food and habitat, making them an interesting fish to learn about and, where regulations allow, put on the dinner table.
After paddling around Windermere Lake and catching one, we brought it back to the hotel, cooked it up and did the taste test.
So, are pumpkinseed sunfish actually good to eat?
We weren't expecting much from such a small fish, but it surprised us. It was actually amazing!
A simple afternoon of paddle board fishing in BC turned into another unexpected outdoor adventure and a chance to learn a little more about one of British Columbia's introduced fish species.
