In 1979, two families flew out of East Germany in a homemade hot-air balloon. They weren't the only ones willing to risk everything.
For 28 years, East Germans tried to cross the Berlin Wall and the inner German border: through tunnels, on zip lines, hidden in cars, swimming the Baltic Sea, and even by being "bought free" by West Germany. This is the story of how they did it, what it cost, and the night the wall finally opened.
