Unemployed & Living Alone in China | I Spent Only $1.80 on Groceries

What does an ordinary day look like for an unemployed Chinese girl living alone? I’m Jingjing, and I’ve been out of work for a few months now. Before this, I worked as a kindergarten teacher in China. Back then, I had to wake up around 6 a.m. and arrive at work by 6:30. I was responsible for around 20 children, teaching lessons, preparing lesson plans, helping with performances, rehearsals, and even making props during my own time. I was working close to 10 hours a day, but my annual salary was only about $3,800. Eventually, I became exhausted and decided I needed a break. Today, I wake up with my cat Piggy and realize there’s almost nothing left in my refrigerator. I have two 50-yuan notes left in my wallet — about $14 — so I decide to walk to the supermarket and buy some inexpensive food. On the way, I stop for a $1.40 coconut latte, walk through a local shopping area, and show you some ordinary streets and neighborhoods in China. At the supermarket, vegetables are surprisingly cheap. Some cost around $0.28 per kilogram, broccoli is about $0.56 per kilogram, and lean pork is around $2 per kilogram. In the end, I spend only $1.80 on groceries. The food I bought should be enough for about three days, and tomorrow I can cook for myself again. I also pass a nail salon on my way home. A manicure would cost at least $14 — basically all the cash I brought with me — so that’s definitely not happening today. 😄 This is my real life in China: no luxury, no acting, just an ordinary girl living alone, trying to spend carefully and enjoy the simple moments in life.
