I hope you enjoy this new drum cover! This performance showcases a range of drum and snare techniques, with a focus on solid rhythms. As a drummer, my aim is to constantly improve my drumming skills. Let me know what you think of this cover! ‘Long Tall Sally’ is a classic rock and roll song originally recorded by Little Richard on 10 February 1956 at J&M Studio in New Orleans, and released in March of that year. The Beatles, who were great admirers of Richard, performed it from their days as the Quarrymen in 1957 right through to their final concert in 1966. Their studio version was recorded in a single take on 1 March 1964 at EMI Studios (Abbey Road), London, during the A Hard Day’s Night sessions, with George Martin on piano; it was released on the Long Tall Sally EP on 19 June 1964 in the UK. Ringo Starr used his 1963 Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl kit, the first he ever bought, featuring a 20" bass drum, toms and a snare drum standard for that era of The Beatles. In forums and fan analyses, his ‘four on the floor’ bass drum pattern, shuffle on the crash/ride, intense fills on the snare and toms, and an explosive 10-bar outro with triplets alternating between crash, ride, snare, bass drum and floor tom are highlighted. Many call it “phenomenal” and “Ringo’s best rock and roll”, comparing him to Keith Moon for his frenetic energy, though they question whether it was actually him due to his unique, wild style on this track. In live performances, he made it even more bombastic, and drum covers emphasise his swing and drive to capture that power. FOLLOW ME: Instagram @abbey_tunes TikTok abbey_tunes_drums
