Cloves may look like an ordinary spice today, but for centuries they were a rare luxury powerful empires fought to control. Native to a small group of volcanic islands in eastern Indonesia, cloves traveled through ancient trade networks long before Europeans reached their source. Portuguese and Spanish explorers raced across the globe for direct access, while the Dutch VOC later built a powerful monopoly, controlled production, and even destroyed clove trees to keep supply limited and prices high. But the monopoly had one weakness: the clove was a living plant. Once clove trees escaped Dutch-controlled territory and took root elsewhere, the geography that had protected their scarcity began to disappear. The crop eventually spread as far as Zanzibar, where a booming clove plantation economy became deeply connected to slavery and the East African slave trade.
