Kerala Is Now Keralam! | President Murmu Approves Name Change | #DeafTalksNews

Hello and Welcome to Deaf Talks News! The state of Kerala has officially been renamed as Keralam. The old name Kerala with an A at the end. The new official name is Keralam with an M at the end. This may look like a small change. But for the people of Kerala it is a very big and emotional moment. Why was this change needed? When India became independent and states were formed. The Constitution used the British colonial English terms. So they kept Kerala. But in malayalam it's called Keralam. India is a land of many languages and cultures. They wanted their state's name in the Indian Constitution to reflect their own language and identity, not a colonial English version. The Kerala state government passed a resolution in the Kerala Assembly in June 2024. They requested the central government to officially change the name. The bill to rename Kerala as Keralam was passed in Lok Sabha last Tuesday. The very next day it was passed in Rajya Sabha too. Both houses of Parliament approved. Then the bill was sent to President Droupadi Murmu and she officially signed the bill. The Constitutional Amendment has been made. India is a land of many languages and cultures. Keralam is not the first state to change their name. Odisha was earlier called Orissa but changed to Odisha in 2011. Kolkata was Calcutta. Mumbai was Bombay. Chennai was Madras. All these name changes were about reclaiming identity after colonial rule. Keralam is the newest addition to this proud list. Congratulations to the people of Keralam.
