China Built a Bridge 626 Meters Above a Canyon — Here’s How

China’s Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge carries a highway 626.01 meters above the landscape below — making it the highest bridge ever officially measured. But the record is only the beginning of the engineering story. With a 1,420-meter main suspension span across the mountains of Guizhou, engineers had to assemble more than 21,000 tonnes of steel where conventional support from the ground was impractical. This documentary explores the bridge’s suspension system, intelligent cable hoisting, extreme canyon winds, millimeter-level positioning, final span closure, structural monitoring and load testing. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge opened to traffic on September 28, 2025, transforming a journey that once took roughly two hours into a crossing measured in minutes.
