Why did a city walk into the eye of a hurricane? In September 1926, a storm hit Miami at the height of the Florida land boom. During the calm of the eye, thousands of newcomers walked outside, and then the back side of the storm came in. The boom never came back.

ACCURACY NOTE
Death toll: the Red Cross count was 372 dead and over 6,000 injured. Other estimates run higher, and hundreds were listed as missing. The true number is still disputed.
The lull: the eye passed over Miami for about 35 minutes (Gray's account). There is no reliable count of how many died in the lull, though the claim that many did is widely repeated.
Richard Gray: the quote comes from his own account. Sources differ on how he warned people: by shouting from a window or by going out into the street.
Maps and storm tracks are approximate, based on the HURDAT reanalysis. The surge graphic is illustrative.
