This video is about how to develop one of the core skills in CBT: understanding how you feel and breaking it down into different elements.
Often, we don't quite know why we feel the way we feel, or what is going on. Using this technique can help you identify what might be happening, because it all happens so quickly. This technique is about breaking it down into 5 sections:
Situation: what's going on at the time?
Thoughts: how does my mind interpret what is going on? This might be a conscious thinking process or it might be more of a gut feeling e.g. "Oh, no I have done something wrong."
Emotion: how do I feel? Is it anxious? Angry? Frustrated? Sad? Flat?
Physical: what does the emotion do to my body? E.g. tension or churning stomach
Behaviour: What does this then drive me to do? e.g. checking my emails, distracting myself, avoiding things
This video covers how to do this and how to tackle some of the barriers you might come across, using a real example from my own life.
