A full lap of the Central Park drives on a bright, low-sun morning — 6.3 miles of car-free asphalt with runners, walkers and cyclists sharing the road the whole way.
The route starts on West Drive and takes the loop the long way around: shaded blacktop under a wall of green, the 15 mph signs and curve warnings that only exist inside the park, and long stretches where the double yellow line is the only thing separating you from a rolling stream of cyclists. Early on the sun is still low enough to come through the trees in flares and lay the shadows flat across the road.
Past the south end the drive swings through Center Drive and turns north up East Drive, where the park is busiest — benches full, walkers two abreast on the pedestrian lane, a food cart and a Citi Bike dock parked at the curb, joggers going both directions. The road here is wide and the grade is gentle, the kind of surface that reads as steady effort rather than scenery you have to work for.
The last third climbs into the north end, where the trees close in and the drive bends hard through the hills before dropping back onto West Drive to finish. No traffic, no intersections to stop at — just an hour of park road, sunlight and other people running.
Route highlights:
• Start: West Drive, heading south under the trees
• Center Drive across the south end of the park
• East Drive north — benches, food carts, the busiest stretch of the loop
• North end hills, the drive bending through deep shade
• Turnaround / Finish: back onto West Drive
