📅 Date: July 25, 2025 Day 91 gave us two completely different experiences in a single day. In the morning, we left the Oaxaca Valley behind and climbed high into the Sierra Norte to visit one of the most beautiful Pueblos Mágicos we've encountered anywhere in Mexico. By afternoon, we found ourselves immersed in the energy, music, colors, and celebrations of Oaxaca's most famous cultural event: 🎉 La Guelaguetza. 🚙 Travel & Vehicle Telemetry 📅 Date: July 25, 2025 📍 Starting Point: Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca 🛣️ Route: Teotitlán del Valle → San Francisco Lachigoló → Ixtepeji → Capulálpam de Méndez → Oaxaca de Juárez → Teotitlán del Valle 🏁 Destination: Return to Teotitlán del Valle 🚙 Distance Driven: 191.5 km (119 mi) ⛽ Fuel Consumed: 18.348 L 💵 Fuel Cost: $515.03 MXN ⛰️ The Drive Into Oaxaca's Sierra Norte We left around 8:00 a.m. for what would become one of the most technically demanding drives of the trip. The route followed Highway 175 into the Sierra Norte. What looked manageable on a map quickly turned into hours of: ⚠️ Tight curves ⚠️ Continuous climbing ⚠️ Narrow mountain roads ⚠️ Oncoming traffic in confined sections The drive required constant concentration and reminded us that mountain roads in Mexico can be far more challenging than the distance alone suggests. For anyone who enjoys driving, this was one of those routes that demands respect. 🌲 Discovering Capulálpam de Méndez When we finally arrived, the effort behind the wheel immediately felt worth it. Capulálpam de Méndez was stunning. 🌺 Flowers everywhere 🏡 Beautifully maintained streets ⛪ Historic architecture 🌲 Clean mountain air 😊 Friendly residents What impressed us most was the authenticity of the experience. Many travel destinations feel increasingly commercialized. Capulálpam felt different. 🚙 A Practical Oaxaca Strategy Rather than trying to drive directly into the center, we followed a strategy that worked extremely well. ✅ Leave the Jeep in a secure parking lot ✅ Explore the city on foot ✅ Avoid traffic and parking stress ✅ Focus on the experience For major festivals and crowded events, walking almost always beats driving. 🌙 Leaving Before the Rush As much as we were enjoying the festivities, we made a conscious decision not to stay too late. One lesson we've learned after months on the road is that timing matters. Because the route back to Teotitlán involved rural roads and many festival attendees would remain out late celebrating, we preferred to leave before night driving became more demanding. Sometimes the smartest travel decision is knowing when to call it a day. 🏡 Accommodation Casa Carmín 📍 Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca ✅ Strategic location near Oaxaca City ✅ Easier access during Guelaguetza season ✅ Excellent base for exploring nearby communities 🌎 Day 91 perfectly captured what makes Oaxaca special. 🚐 TRAVELNAUTAS RESOURCES 🗺️ Road-trip guides, border-crossing logistics, vehicle preparation tips, travel tools, and practical resources. 🌐 Website: https://travelnautas.co 📍 Follow our complete Canada-to-Mexico journey on Polarsteps: https://www.polarsteps.com/Migueloria... 📚 GET THE BOOK 🇺🇸 ENGLISH Drive to Mexico in Your Own Vehicle A Practical Guide to Crossing the U.S. and Exploring Mexico by Road Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0GX3BC6YJ Google Play Books: https://play.google.com/store/books/d... 🇪🇸 ESPAÑOL Rumbo a México en tu propio auto Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0GX2YK2R2 Google Play Books: https://play.google.com/store/books/d... 🇫🇷 FRANÇAIS En route vers le Mexique avec votre propre véhicule Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0H1Z2C3DS Google Play Books: https://play.google.com/store/books/d... #️⃣ Hashtags #Capulalpam #Oaxaca #Guelaguetza #SierraNorte #MexicoRoadTrip #Travelnautas #RoadTripMexico #PuebloMagico #dashcam #MexicoByCar #CanadianInMexico
