Just off a quiet beach in Suffolk lies a medieval town the North Sea swallowed: Dunwich, "Britain's Atlantis". How did one of England's great ports vanish, and how did scientists map its drowned streets with sound?
Once among England's ten largest towns, medieval Dunwich lost its harbour, eight churches and most of its streets to storm surges from 1286 to 1362 and to centuries of cliff erosion. In 2013 University of Southampton researchers published sonar and acoustic-camera surveys of the ruins on the seabed.
