How 1,100 Artists Faked an Army in WWII (The Ghost Army)

In 1944, two Frenchmen on bicycles watched four American soldiers pick up a Sherman tank. The tank was made of rubber. It belonged to the Ghost Army: about 1,100 artists, designers, radio operators and sound engineers whose job was to make the German army see an army that was not there. Inflatable tanks, 500-pound speakers, "spoof radio", fake shoulder patches and carefully wrong gossip in French cafés: this is how the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops put on more than 20 deception operations, from Normandy to the Rhine, and why the story stayed secret until 1996.
