A number above the church door caught my attention: “400.” “How long is 400 years?” That simple question sent my thoughts in many different directions. Four hundred years ago, Japan was in the Edo period. And throughout its long history, many different people, cultures, religions, languages, and foreign rulers came to the Philippines from across the sea. And once again, I started thinking about the Filipino smile—the question I have been exploring since Part One. Why do people in this country smile so much? Because it’s a tropical country? Because Filipinos are cheerful? Religion? Family? History? Culture? Or could there be something in those smiles—a kind of wisdom for living, passed down through generations? Of course, I’m not saying that smiling is written into Filipino DNA. There is no evidence for that. What I began thinking about was not DNA, but what may be passed down through culture. What do we do when life becomes difficult? How do we let go of anger? How do we live with sadness? How do we face tomorrow when there is nothing we can do? And—how do we smile? Maybe a smile is not something that appears only when we are happy. Maybe people smiled even after crying, and still continued to face another day. I call it, in my own way, the “Survival Algorithm.” But this is only one idea from a 66-year-old Japanese man—not a historian or researcher—who sat in a church for an hour and started thinking. I don’t know if I’m right. In fact, the more I thought about it, the less I understood. because I understand less, I now see people’s smiles as something a little more precious. And at the end, I come to something I simply cannot avoid. I am Japanese. That story continues in Part Three. I hope you’ll stay with me until the end. And it’s perfectly okay to say, “AGA, I think you’re wrong.” Please tell me what you felt and what you think in the comments. I’ll read your comments and start thinking again. そしてまた教会へ行って、座って—— Then I’ll go to another church, sit down— たぶん、また疑問を増やして帰ってきます。 and probably come home with even more questions. 😂 Gya-haha. New videos every Tuesday and Friday. Please subscribe to the channel and give the video a like.
