Ray is wrapping up his first bonus week of Board & Train at Best Paw Forward Dog Training in Perkasie, PA! Ray has trained with us before, and we're so happy to have him back for two additional weeks of training! During this time, we're focusing on strengthening his leave it, counter surfing, recall, leash manners, and overall listening skills to help him become more consistent in everyday situations. In today's training video, Ray worked on several important skills: Leave It: Practicing ignoring tempting items and redirecting his attention back to his handler instead of going after things he shouldn't have. Counter Surfing: Teaching Ray to leave items on counters alone instead of jumping up to investigate or grab something. Recall: Strengthening Ray's ability to come when called, even when there are distractions around him. These skills are especially important for Ray because we want him to be able to make good choices both inside the home and while out on walks. By practicing in different situations, we're helping him understand that the same rules and expectations apply no matter where he is! Tips for practicing at home: Keep counters clear: Prevent Ray from practicing counter surfing by keeping food and tempting items out of reach when he isn't being directly supervised. Practice leave it consistently: Start with lower-value items and gradually increase difficulty as Ray becomes more reliable. Use leave it during walks: Practice redirecting Ray away from distractions while on leash, rewarding him when he responds and refocuses on you. Make recall rewarding: Practice calling Ray back to you in controlled environments and always reward him for responding. Use a long line when practicing outdoors until his recall is reliable. Don't give too much freedom too quickly: Continue supervising Ray and setting him up for success while he builds consistency with these skills. Be consistent: Make sure everyone in the household follows the same rules and expectations so Ray understands what is expected of him. One of the biggest goals during Ray's additional training is to improve his reliability with commands he has already learned while continuing to work through some of the challenges he's having at home. We're excited about the work Ray is putting in and look forward to continuing his progress during his second and final bonus week of training! 📍 Best Paw Forward Dog Training | Perkasie, PA 🐾 Proudly serving Bucks County, PA, and surrounding areas!
