Every Monday I put my health numbers in public, good or bad. This week they were bad, and one of them stopped me cold.
I picked up a Hume Health band and the body scan scale this week, so for the first time I'm pulling body composition instead of just a weight. The scan came back with a metabolic age of 59. I'm 51. That is an eight year gap on the one system that touches everything else, how you break down food, how much energy you can reach for, how much you actually move.
The rest of the week matched it. Resting heart rate went up when it should be going down. HRV went down when it should be going up. Weight yo yoed from 208 on Tuesday to 214 by Sunday, which is what happens when summer barbecues run into a 12 to 7 eating window. Steps were the one bright spot, over 10,000 a day, and the band tracks them far more accurately than my Apple Watch does. No VO2 max reading. No blood pressure reading. Two nights of sleep I never captured because I forgot to wear the band to bed.
The takeaway I keep landing on is that a low dose routine you actually stick to beats an aggressive plan you abandon by week three. And that a perfect machine still runs badly on the wrong fuel.
I record these every week to hold myself accountable and to make the case for taking agency over your own health, because access to care is getting more expensive, not less. None of this is medical advice. Work with your doctor, do not fire them.
