Mercury Is the HARDEST Planet to Reach — and the reason is one of the strangest challenges in space exploration. Although Mercury is much closer to Earth than planets like Jupiter or Saturn, reaching it and successfully entering orbit can require an extraordinary amount of energy and precision.
The problem is the Sun. As a spacecraft travels inward toward Mercury, the Sun’s enormous gravity accelerates it to extremely high speeds. Simply reaching Mercury isn’t enough — a spacecraft must also slow down enough to be captured by the planet’s relatively weak gravity.
That is why missions such as ESA and JAXA’s BepiColombo use solar-electric propulsion and carefully planned gravity assists to gradually shed orbital energy. BepiColombo has spent years navigating the inner Solar System and is now approaching its historic Mercury arrival phase, with orbit insertion scheduled for November 2026.
What You Will Learn
• Why Mercury is harder to reach than it looks
• How the Sun’s gravity makes the journey so difficult
• Why spacecraft must slow down before entering Mercury’s orbit
• How gravity assists save enormous amounts of fuel
• Why BepiColombo’s journey is one of the most challenging planetary missions
