i used to worry that i was forgetting everything i read. the underlines fading. the margins going quiet. the names of characters slipping out of me one by one like coins through a hole in a pocket i did not know i had. then i walked into this room. and the chair was waiting for me. every book i had ever finished had, apparently, not disappeared at all. it had gone somewhere. it had gone here. it had settled into the shape of something that could hold my weight when i finally got tired enough to need holding. the words on the chair are not in one language. some of them are older than any language i have studied. some of them, i suspect, are things i wrote in the margins of books i no longer own, in versions of myself i no longer am. the chair does not sort them. the chair does not judge them. the chair just keeps them, in the order they arrived, which is the only order that has ever really mattered. i stood in front of it for a long time before i climbed up. it seemed presumptuous, somehow, to sit on something that large. but the light above me did not move. the chair did not shrink. and eventually i understood that the invitation was not going to be repeated, and also, more importantly, that it did not need to be. what you read does not leave you. it just changes shape and waits somewhere in you, patiently, for the day you need to rest inside it. tonight i am resting inside everything i have read. the chair, it turns out, was always going to fit. 🕯 best experienced with headphones, in low light, alone. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ A still haven for the mind that needs to pause.
