Sat Down With Four Strangers Who Had Been Studying the Sky for Centuries | Focus Music

i pulled up a chair at their table. none of them looked up. they had been in the middle of a conversation for four hundred years, and my arrival was not, apparently, urgent enough to interrupt it. the old man in the green robe was pointing at a constellation on the globe. he was not explaining it to me. he was explaining it to whoever had asked, several lifetimes ago, and had been waiting patiently ever since for the answer. the boy behind him held a flask of something green and glowing. i did not ask what it was. it seemed rude. the woman on the right was raising a small telescope to her eye, correcting, in silence, something the old man had gotten slightly wrong. the scholar in the back was flipping through a book, looking for the page where somebody had already figured this out so nobody would have to figure it out again. i sat there for a long time. i understood almost none of it. but i understood the shape of it — the leaning-in, the pointing, the checking, the reading, the way none of them believed they were the smartest one at the table, the way none of them were in a hurry to be right alone. that is what focus looks like, i think. not one person locked in a room with a problem. four people, across four centuries, quietly refusing to let the problem go. the candles will burn down eventually. the globe will be put away. but the conversation, i suspect, will keep going without them, in whichever room the next curious person decides to sit down in. tonight, that room is mine. tonight, i am the fifth chair. 🕯 best experienced with headphones, in low light, alone. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ A still haven for the mind that needs to pause.
