In 2007, four out of every ten mobile phones sold on the planet carried the Nokia logo. By 2012, roughly ninety-five billion euros of its stock market value had evaporated, and the company sold its phone business to Microsoft for less than three percent of what it had been worth at its 2000 peak. This film follows the decisions behind that collapse: Jorma Ollila's 1992 bet on mobile phones that made Nokia the world's largest handset maker by 1998, the touchscreen prototypes its own engineers built years before the iPhone, and the internal bureaucracy that let Android overtake Symbian from the inside. It follows Stephen Elop, the Microsoft executive hired in 2010 to run Nokia, his leaked 'burning platform' memo, the switch to Windows Phone, the 7.2 billion dollar sale of Nokia's phone division to Microsoft, and the roughly 25 million dollar exit package Elop received the same week the deal was signed. The video traces how a company holding forty percent of a global market can talk itself down to three percent in two years, using its own paper trail of memos, credit downgrades and boardroom decisions as evidence.
