Coco Gauff tried to stay quiet. She tried to focus on her tennis. But after repeatedly waiting for Laura Siegemund to get ready between points, Coco finally decided she had seen enough.
Their 2023 US Open first-round match became one of the most heated encounters of Gauff's championship run. Siegemund stunned the American by taking the opening set 6-3, using slices, aggressive net play and constant changes of pace to make Coco uncomfortable.
But another issue was becoming impossible to ignore. Gauff believed Siegemund was repeatedly taking too long to prepare for Coco's serve. The Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd noticed it too, and frustration inside the stadium continued building.
By the third set, Coco finally approached chair umpire Marijana Veljovic and demanded an explanation. Gauff argued that she was playing at a normal speed while constantly being forced to wait, telling the umpire she had remained quiet throughout the match but now believed the situation had become ridiculous.
Eventually, Siegemund received a point penalty for another delay. The crowd became increasingly hostile toward the German, booing and reacting loudly to her mistakes as Gauff moved closer to victory.
Coco eventually completed the comeback 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 after nearly three hours. But the controversy did not end when the players left the court.
During her press conference, Siegemund broke down in tears while discussing how the New York crowd had treated her. She admitted that she plays slowly and needed to be quicker, but strongly rejected the suggestion that she was deliberately trying to cheat or manipulate Gauff.
Siegemund said the reaction hurt because she felt spectators treated her like a bad person rather than an opponent fighting desperately to win. She was particularly upset that fans applauded mistakes and made noise against her.
Coco viewed the confrontation differently. She explained that she normally dislikes confrontation but believed she eventually had to speak up for herself. Michelle Obama, who watched the match with Barack Obama, later even told Gauff that speaking up for herself was a good thing.
What followed makes this match even more remarkable. Coco survived the controversy, continued through the tournament and eventually captured her first US Open championship.
For Siegemund, however, the emotional scars from that night were obvious. One incredibly tense match produced anger on the court, tears afterward and a debate about fairness, crowd behavior and exactly where gamesmanship ends in professional tennis.
