What happens when you try to design a tiny space around the idea of romance?
I'm Lola, and this is Sammy. We're home for the holidays, and I'm exploring the traditions, rituals, and feelings that bring us together by creating imaginative worlds inside a tiny van.
For this design, I went back to the ancient Greeks, who connected romance with three things: desire, friendship, and madness. Those ideas became my starting point for a van interior filled with innocent white lace, deep red velvet, dramatic patterns, dark carved wood, and unexpected contrasts.
But the first design didn't work. So I went back to the drawing board, changed the colors, rethought the patterns, and discovered something new about the relationship between beauty and function.
Along the way, I explore how to make art functional in a tiny space, how ornate furniture details could inspire 3D-printed cabinet insets, and how experimenting with imaginary designs is helping me plan my future box truck home.
Does the finished room express romance? I'm not entirely sure. But I love the way it turned out, and I learned a lot by following the creative process.
Because sometimes the most interesting discoveries happen when you stop trying to find the answer and start exploring.
