An act of attainder let Parliament condemn a person without trial, and in 1539 Thomas Cromwell used one on a countess of 65. Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, was the last Plantagenet, daughter of the Duke of Clarence and once governess to Princess Mary. Her son, Cardinal Reginald Pole, had called Henry VIII a tyrant in print from the safety of Italy. She paid for it in the Tower of London. Catherine Howard sent her warm clothes and four pairs of shoes. On 27 May 1541 a stand-in executioner hacked her apart with an axe, the ambassador Chapuys wrote. Rome beatified her in 1886.
