Between the late 1920s and the outbreak of the Second World War, aviation underwent a period of rapid mechanical evolution. Through restored and colorized archival footage, firsthand pilot interviews, and flying demonstrations, this documentary examines the aircraft, engineers, and aviators who pushed the boundaries of speed, altitude, and endurance during the Golden Age of Flight. The story opens in 1925 with the US Army and Navy ordering high-speed Curtiss racing biplanes. After winning the Pulitzer Trophy as the land-based R3C-1, the aircraft was fitted with floats as the Curtiss R3C-2. Piloted by Lieutenant Jimmy Doolittle at Baltimore, it defeated British and Italian competitors to claim the Schneider Trophy and set a world seaplane speed record of 245 mph. By the early 1930s, promoter Cliff Henderson had transformed the National Air Races into a premier national spectacle, anchored by the closed-course Thompson Trophy and the transcontinental Bendix Trophy. While pylon racers battled in Cleveland, long-distance pioneers conquered global geography in the Jack Northrop-designed Lockheed Vega. In 1931, Wiley Post and navigator Harold Gatty circled the globe in the Vega Winnie Mae in under nine days. In May 1932, Amelia Earhart flew her modified Lockheed Vega 5B solo across the icing clouds of the North Atlantic to Northern Ireland, following up three months later with a nonstop transcontinental flight to Newark. Back at Cleveland in September 1932, Doolittle took control of the volatile, 800-horsepower Granville Brothers Gee Bee R-1, setting a landplane world record of 294.38 mph and lapping nearly the entire Thompson field. The narrative follows the triumphs and tragedies of the mid-1930s: Roscoe Turner's victories in the Wedell-Williams and Twin Wasp-powered Turner Meteor alongside his pet lion Gilmore, Ernst Udet's dead-stick aerobatics, Steve Wittman's lightweight Chief Oshkosh and Bonzo racers, and Ben Howard's cabin monoplane Mr. Mulligan sweeping both the Bendix and Thompson Trophies in 1935. Simultaneously, Wiley Post developed the world's first BF Goodrich pressure suit to take the supercharged Winnie Mae into the stratosphere, surviving engine sabotage onto Muroc Dry Lake and discovering the high-altitude jet stream at 340 mph. That same year, Howard Hughes shattered the landplane speed record at 352 mph in his wind-tunnel-refined Hughes H-1 Racer, while Tony LeVier tested the limits of the Keith Rider Schoenfeld Firecracker in 1938. Finally, the film visits the 1946 Cleveland Air Races, where surplus World War II fighters like Tony LeVier's P-38 Lightning and Tex Johnston's winning Bell P-39 Airacobra closed the piston era just as jet propulsion took command of the skies.
