I Found More Gold Than I Could Dig in One Day | MOTHERLODE SAGA

I’d already dug on this face twice, but the Gold Monster 2000 kept finding fresh targets inside a jet-black, graphite-rich vein. Every time I thought I had cleaned out one section, another signal was waiting beside it, and by the end of the day the ground had become so hard that I had to stop with gold still in the wall. This was easily some of the most physically difficult hard-rock gold mining I’ve done. I followed the detector through crumbling black mineralization, gold-bearing quartz, roasted pyrite and sandstone, recovering visible gold specimens as well as pieces carrying gold so small I could barely see it. We also panned some of the loose material and found fine gold throughout it, which means the surrounding ore is being stockpiled, crushed and processed rather than thrown away. There’s an old saying that gold rides the iron horse, and this pocket is a perfect example. The iron-rich material, eroded pyrite, black vein, repeated non-ferrous detector signals and visible gold all kept pointing in the same direction. Even after hours of digging, the vein turned the corner and continued giving up targets. I didn’t finish this pocket.
