I took my Brompton Electric G-Line on an overnighter, taking a high-speed train roughly 300 miles from home and spent the weekend riding, camping and trying to travel without having to plan my day around charging. For that, I carried two 80-watt solar panels and a Bluetti Elite 10 power station to recharge the bike from the sun.
It didn't all go to plan. The wind flipped my solar panels over, I forgot my phone charging cable, the campsite wasn't quite as quiet as expected, and the hills made the Brompton's limited battery range very noticeable.
But the next morning, surrounded by fog on the river, something changed: it actually felt like vacation.
And that turned out to be the real test. Not whether solar charging works, but whether this little system can give me what I want from a weekend — and take me to places I might otherwise never have gone.
