In this video I go through what the research says about daily step counts, and how walking changes your blood sugar control, your blood pressure, your brain and your energy levels, and why the stretch from sedentary to around five thousand steps a day is where the largest return on effort is hiding.
Most advice about walking is written for people who already move. This one is for the opposite situation, for anyone who drives to work, sits at a desk, drives home and has been told to move more so many times that the whole idea now feels pointless. The relationship between steps and how long you live is a curve rather than a straight line, and the steepest part of that curve sits right at the bottom, which means the person starting from almost nothing has more to gain from every step than anyone else does.
I also explain the biology underneath it, from the way contracting muscle pulls sugar straight out of your bloodstream, to the way faster blood flow signals your arteries to relax and widen, to what regular movement does to memory, mood and the tiny power stations inside your cells.
