CASE BACKGROUND: On April 20, 2018, Ethan Hauschultz died after allegedly being subjected to severe physical punishment at his guardian's home in Newton, Wisconsin. According to prosecutors, Ethan was forced to carry a heavy wooden log around the backyard in freezing conditions as punishment for failing to memorize Bible verses. Prosecutors allege that Timothy Hauschultz, Ethan's great-uncle and court-appointed guardian, ordered the punishment and instructed his teenage son, Damian Hauschultz, to supervise it. Damian was subsequently convicted of first-degree reckless homicide and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Timothy Hauschultz faces multiple criminal charges, including child neglect resulting in death and contributing to the delinquency of a child resulting in death.
