She called 911 because she was afraid someone was outside her home. But the officer who responded to help her would become the very person responsible for her death.
On July 6, 2024, 36-year-old Sonya Massey, a Black mother of two from Springfield, Illinois, made an emergency call requesting police assistance. She had no idea that the encounter would end in tragedy and spark national outrage.
Two Sangamon County sheriff’s deputies arrived at her home. What happened next would become the subject of a major criminal investigation, intense public scrutiny, and a courtroom battle that raised serious questions about police accountability.
Former deputy Sean Grayson was charged with first-degree murder. In October 2025, a jury convicted him of second-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison in January 2026.
But Sonya’s story didn’t end with the verdict.
Questions surrounding Grayson’s law enforcement employment history, the handling of the investigation, and the family’s pursuit of accountability continued to attract public attention.
In this State Line Crime documentary, we examine the events surrounding Sonya Massey’s 911 call, the official investigation, the evidence presented in court, the criminal trial, the verdict, sentencing, and the developments that followed.
We also explore how Sonya’s family fought to ensure that her name would not be forgotten.
How did a call for protection end in a murder conviction? And what did the investigation reveal about the officer who responded?
This documentary goes beyond the headlines to examine the evidence, the legal proceedings, and the human story behind a case that shocked the nation.
