A single top quark has no parts inside it, yet it weighs about as much as a whole atom of tungsten. It is about 340,000 times heavier than an electron and about 40 times heavier than its own partner, the bottom quark. Its weight comes from an unusually strong grip on the Higgs field, a grip with a strength of almost exactly one. That same weight helps decide whether the empty space around us is permanent, or only extremely long-lived.
This calm, long-form documentary starts with the ladder of quark masses and why a proton's weight is mostly strong-force energy. It then follows the top quark's half-a-trillionth-of-a-trillionth-of-a-second life and explains how the Higgs field turns grip into mass. Along the way it covers how physicists weighed the top quark through quantum shadows before finding it, the 1995 discovery, the modern measurement, spin, entanglement and toponium, the hierarchy problem, and why the top may be the one particle with a natural mass. It ends with the competing explanations for its grip and the near-critical stability of our vacuum.
