IKPIHIONUA: THE SEVEN-YEAR TRADITION OF IMOGA | AKOKO-EDO Once every seven years, the people of Imoga in Akoko-Edo, Edo State, celebrate Ikpihionua—an ancient Okpameri age-grade tradition that represents growth, responsibility, culture and the transition of young men into adulthood. But Ikpihionua is far more than a single day of celebration. The ceremony unfolds over nine months, involving age-grade activities, traditional learning, the Agwa hunting tradition, Onyenemi Day, and the grand appearance of four magnificent masquerades representing the four quarters of Imoga: Afogwi, Ikimi, Ugbobo and Egwokula. In this documentary, we explore the story behind this remarkable tradition, the different stages of the ceremony, the role of the age grades, and the cultural meaning behind the spectacular masquerades. From the forest rituals to the grand Ikpihionua Day, this is a journey into one of the traditions that continues to preserve the cultural identity and heritage of the Okpameri people. 🎥 Watch, learn and experience the story of Ikpihionua.
