The Nannies Paid To Love America's Heirs, Then ERASED From The Family STORY
Officially, America's great families raised their own children. The magazines ran the photographs, the mother on the lawn, the heirs in matching coats. But in almost every one of those houses there was another woman, standing just outside the frame. A German governess taught a lonely girl in Newport to write, and the girl became Edith Wharton. An Irish nurse raised Gloria Vanderbilt for ten years, then was ordered out of her life by a judge. A young English maid in New Jersey, questioned again and again in the Lindbergh case, drank silver polish rather than face the police one more time. Her alibi turned out to be true. And on November 22, 1963, it was the nanny, not the mother, who sat on Caroline Kennedy's bed and found the words. Years later, her handwritten diary sold at auction in Boston.
Twenty-two pages. And not one line about that night.
