This is Kochi Castle, in the city of Kochi, Kochi Prefecture. On a small hill in the middle of the city stands the tenshu, the castle's tallest building. Around the very top of the tenshu runs a balcony that goes all the way around. It happened during the Showa-era repairs. In a storehouse in the honmaru, the heart of the castle, an old railing post was found. Where metal fittings had once been attached, traces of lacquer remained. The rest had been worn by rain and wind. It was a post that had once been used outdoors. Yet in the old plans and records, no building in the castle used a railing like this, except the balcony at the very top of the tenshu. The records say that balcony was added to suit the taste of one lord. From Yamauchi Kazutoyo, granted Tosa after Sekigahara, and Ieyasu's words in the domain's record, "Build your castle wherever you wish," to the hill Chosokabe Motochika left after only three years, lying between two rivers; stones shipped from Urado Castle, samurai carrying bamboo, wood, earth and stone, children with stones in their sleeves, a dance that packed down the ground, six riders dressed alike, Kazutoyo among them, a first tenshu ordered built just like Kakegawa's, the hill's name rewritten, and in 1727, a fire that broke out west of the castle: drawing on the 1955 repair report and GSI elevation data, we rebuild the tenshu and its hill in 3D and follow the castle from the winter of 1600 to today. English subtitles are available (CC).(日本語の字幕は画面に入っています) ■ チャプター / Chapters 0:00 オープニング / Opening 1:00 掛川から来た殿様 / The Lord from Kakegawa 2:26 侍も石を運んだ / Even the Samurai Carried Stones 5:29 西からの火 / Fire from the West 8:02 書類にない城 / The Castle Missing from the Lists 10:12 縁に立つ / Standing on the Balcony ■ この動画について 建物は、資料に記された寸法をもとに3Dで作り直したものです。 ■ About this video The buildings are recreated in 3D from dimensions recorded in historical documents. Where the documents are silent, we fill the gaps with estimates and say so in the video. The drawings shown on screen are generated from our own 3D model. Some details are simplified for clarity. Past scenes (Urado Castle, the building works, the first keep, the 1727 fire and ruins, the rebuilding, the keep of 1749, the railing of 1846, the castle in 1873–75, 1945 and 1946, the 1952 dismantling) and the thumbnail are illustrations based on the sources; the keeps of c. 1603 and 1749 follow today's dimensions, and new railing colours and bronze finials are estimated. Townscapes, outer buildings, diagrams and lists are schematic, as is the Ote-mon's form; map lines show direction only. Ieyasu's words, the building works and the Kakegawa order come from Go-chikujo-ki, a later record of the Tosa domain. Kiyochika's print (1885) and Mutsu Munemitsu's photo are public domain; the other footage is illustrative, not of Kochi Castle. The ground and water come from GSI data, the keep from the 1955 repair report (partly estimated), and honmaru building positions from OpenStreetMap.
