As a Brit living in Latvia there are tastes I miss and one of them is Christmas mince pies! Here in Latvia we can't buy mincemeat so I have to make my own from scratch. IN this video I take you through my homemade mincemeat recipe and talk a little about the history of mincemeat. Mincemeat is a mixture of chopped dried fruit, distilled spirits and spices, and sometimes beef suet, beef, or venison. Originally, mincemeat always contained meat. Many modern recipes contain beef suet, though vegetable shortening is sometimes used in its place. Variants of mincemeat are found in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, northern Europe, Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. In other contexts mincemeat refers to minced or ground meat. Recipe: 500gm Dark raisins ( 250gm chopped ) 500gm golden raisins or sultanas 100gm dates (chopped) 100gm dried cranberries (chopped) 100gm dried cherries (chopped) 100gm candied peel (I used chopped dried Japanese quince) Handful of almonds (or however many you want) (chopped) 1 orange 1 apple Lemon juice 150 gm muscovado sugar Water (250ml) or as required Brandy Follow the video for the method In 2018 we left the UK to come to Gita’s family homestead here in north Latvia, not far from the Estonian border and now we live somewhere nowhere in the middle of a forest in a house built by Gita’s grandfather. We’re videoing our journey and trying to give you some insights into how we’re living here. You can also find us on Instagram where we post different and more regular updates:   / baltichomesteaders
