Cao Cao's army marches south and Liu Bei refuses to abandon the people of Xinye. At Changban the enemy horsemen scatter the crowd and Liu Bei's baby son A Dou is lost. Zhao Yun rides into the enemy again and again — seven times in all — while Cao Cao orders that the brave young general be taken alive. By a dry well Lady Mi gives him the baby and hides in a village; Zhao Yun carries A Dou inside his armour through a wall of banners to Changban Bridge, where Zhang Fei covers him. Liu Bei sets the sleeping baby gently on the grass: “For this child I nearly lost a fine general!” Words to learn: 七进七出 (in and out seven times) and the saying 刘备摔孩子——收买人心 (to win people over).
