In April 1981, three men moving house noticed a fringed buckskin jacket lying in a ditch on Greenlee Road, west of Troy, Ohio. A young woman was wearing it. She had been strangled, she carried no identification, and no one came forward to claim her.

She was buried in Troy's Riverside Cemetery under a stone that read "Jane Doe." For nearly 37 years, she was known only as Buckskin Girl. Her fingerprints, dental records and DNA went into national databases, and nothing ever matched.
What survived was a tube of her blood, drawn at autopsy in 1981 and stored unrefrigerated for decades. In 2018, the volunteer DNA Doe Project used genetic genealogy on that sample and found her family in about four hours. On April 11, 2018, the Miami County Sheriff's Office announced her name. Her murder remains unsolved.
This is the story of a young woman buried as a Jane Doe, the Ohio town that tended her grave for decades, and the forgotten blood sample that finally gave her back her name.
