Our Most Unforgettable Lion Encounters on African Safari

We saw a LOT of incredible wildlife on our African safari, but nothing created quite as much excitement as someone saying: “LIONS!” In this video, we're talking all things lions and sharing some of our favorite lion encounters from our safari adventures in Africa. Like many first-time safari travelers, we hoped to see Africa's famous Big Five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and buffalo. We were incredibly fortunate with our wildlife sightings, but the lions produced some of the most memorable moments of the entire trip. We experienced the excitement of safari vehicles rushing toward a reported lion sighting, watched enormous male lions walk unbelievably close to our jeep, and saw lions gathered around a buffalo kill. But some of our most fascinating encounters involved lionesses and their cubs. At one point, several safari vehicles crowded around a lioness and her cubs and one of the cubs became separated from the others. We watched as the lioness and cubs searched for the missing youngster, and Mom made it VERY clear that she wasn't particularly happy about all those safari vehicles being there. It was fascinating to watch, but it also made us think about the impact we tourists can have on the animals we're so excited to see. Fortunately, we also captured some considerably more peaceful lion moments, including two lionesses relaxing and grooming each other. Seeing lions in a zoo is one thing. Seeing them walking freely through the African bush, sometimes just feet from your safari vehicle, is something entirely different.
