Before Your First African Safari: What the Jeep Ride Is Really Like

What is an African safari actually like? Before our trip, we'd seen plenty of beautiful safari photos and videos. What we didn't completely understand was what we'd be doing for all those hours BETWEEN the animal sightings. So in this video, we're taking you inside the safari jeep to show you what a game drive is really like. There are very early mornings, cold starts, dust everywhere, surprisingly fast drives, incredibly bumpy roads and what one of our guides jokingly called a “free African massage.” You'll see how the safari vehicles are set up, where everyone sits, what the views are like, and how guides communicate with each other when someone spots something exciting. And when word gets out that there's a lion or leopard nearby? Things can get interesting VERY quickly. We experienced safari vehicles racing toward sightings, squeezing past each other on narrow roads, getting stuck in deep sand and occasionally blocking everyone's carefully planned wildlife photos. But there were also some pretty incredible moments. Elephants came unbelievably close to our vehicle. Zebras, giraffes, hyenas and other animals crossed directly in front of us. We stopped for food and drinks, watched hippos at a watering hole, figured out the bathroom situation, and learned that getting from Point A to Point B can sometimes be an adventure all by itself. We'll also introduce you briefly to some of the safari guides who made these experiences possible and show you how much goes on behind the scenes to help guests find the animals they've traveled halfway around the world to see.
