Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Bass Cover - Request

Hello 😊 Here’s my transcription of Smokey Robinson and The Miracles' song "Tears of a Clown". This track comes from their 1967 album Make It Happen. I can't say for certain who the bass player was, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't James Jamerson. If I was to make a bet, I'd put my money on Bob Babbitt. You can find this transcription on Muzento under the Intermediate Songs category. While working on this one, I discovered there are at least two versions of the song that I'm aware of: the original 1967 version and a later 1970 release. The bass parts are quite different between the two. I actually started learning the 1970 version first, but I was having a hard time hearing some of the details in the bass line. The recording quality isn't quite as clear, and there were a number of little licks I wasn't hearing. So I checked with my supporter who made the request, and thankfully he was looking for the 1967 version! 😊 Not only is the bass easier to hear on that recording, but I think the line fits the song better as well. What surprised me, though, was that the older recording actually sounded cleaner to my ears, and the bass part felt tighter and more focused. I would have expected the opposite! But what do I know? It seems like every transcription teaches me something new... usually about how much I still have to learn 😄 From a playing standpoint, you can get through most of the song in a single position, with the exception of the pre-chorus. It's a good one for stretching between the first and fourth fingers (at least the way I play it). Of course, there are plenty of other ways to play it, and I always encourage people to experiment and find what feels most comfortable. As they say, there are many ways to skin a cat. I haven't heard that expression in a while... that's a pretty gruesome expression, isn't it? 😄 I hope you enjoy it.
