Are electric cars really greener once batteries, electricity and recycling are included? In Planet Decode EP05, we follow the entire life cycle: raw materials, manufacturing, energy supply, driving and end of life. We examine what the evidence supports, what depends on context, and why better for the climate does not mean impact-free. We also explain why comparing two new cars is different from deciding whether to replace a car you already own. CHAPTERS 00:00 Electric cars: the real question 01:02 The whole life cycle 01:59 Manufacturing and driving 02:58 What the studies show 04:35 Electricity and location 05:35 Carbon payback and size 06:36 Beyond climate 07:38 Battery chemistry 08:07 Air quality and particles 08:40 Reuse and recycling 10:19 Replacing an existing car 11:20 The evidence check 11:55 Better mobility IMPORTANT CONTEXT The IEA's 55% estimate is global, for comparable medium-sized cars, 35 km/day over 15 years, with electricity evolving under stated policies. The ICCT's 63 versus 235 g CO₂e/km (about 73% lower) concerns medium-sized cars sold in the EU in 2025, using the projected average electricity mix for 2025–2044. These are different studies and assumptions, not interchangeable percentages. The payback diagram is illustrative; it does not predict a universal break-even distance.
