Amelia Earhart's voice reached the ship waiting for her, but a usable bearing never followed. Western Electric built her radio equipment. Decades later, the same name returned to home audio through the 300B tube. This film follows the equipment and the people behind both stories.
• Before the final flight, a two-way conversation succeeded while a direction-finding test failed. Hearing a voice did not mean knowing where it came from.
• Radio logs record interference, short transmissions and dwindling batteries. They do not establish one proven cause of the disappearance.
• The 300B arrived in 1938 for cinema equipment, after Earhart vanished. It was never aboard her aircraft.
• Charles Whitener brought together rights, machinery and former factory workers to make new tubes under the Western Electric name.
• Restarting production took repairs and training. Finished tubes receive serial numbers and measurement cards; pairs are matched by their electrical characteristics.
Which part surprised you more: the radio story or the work needed to bring the 300B back?
