KISHIN — 鬼神 | Japanese Zen Music for Deep Focus, Study and Long Work Sessions Three hours in a wide, old wooden hall at night, seen from low down near the floor, looking straight ahead at the far wall. A thick pillar of dark reddish-brown wood stands at each side, and along the top edge a little of the beams and their brackets shows. The far wall is one old mural from side to side, its ground a golden ochre, with fine flaking and mottled patches. Left of center and reaching toward the middle, a single kishin is painted large: a gray, heavily muscled body, two white horns on the brow, and long black hair streaming far out to the right. Its eyes are wide open, and its open mouth shows its fangs. To its left, a row of drums marked with black three-comma crests curves upward in an arc. Around its waist is a wrap of yellow-and-black striped fur trimmed with white, tied at the front with a red cord whose ends hang down. A dark green cloth with a small flower pattern trails around the body. There are gold rings at the wrists and ankles, and in one hand a short stick like a drumstick. Below the mural runs a long band of wooden paneling, and in front of it a wide floor of polished boards catches the light. Near the middle of the floor sits a black metal three-legged incense burner with gold patterning. At the lower right, a small lantern-shaped light glows warm on the floor. Three hours, and the polished floor holds that warm light until the end.
