In January 1929, Clara Bow received more than 45,000 fan letters in a single month. She was the number one box-office star in America, and the whole world knew her as the It Girl. Four years later, at 28, she walked away from Hollywood for good.
For decades the story was that the talkies destroyed her. That story is wrong. This is the real one: a childhood of poverty in Brooklyn, a magazine contest that changed her life, the film that gave us the phrase "It Girl", a studio that worked her without rest, a courtroom scandal, and the Nevada desert where she finally found some peace.
This video is commentary and education. The images are public-domain photographs, posters and publicity stills from the 1920s and early 1930s, plus modern photos shared under Creative Commons licenses. Facts checked as of October 2026.
